Wood full of pride after fifth-place finish in women’s 200m individual medley final

Abbie Wood finished her Paris 2024 campaign with her head held high after a fifth-place finish in the women’s 200m individual medley final.

Wood qualified in fourth place – where she finished in the Tokyo 2020 final – and was just edged out of a podium place this time after a strong freestyle finish.

Canada’s Summer McIntosh won her third gold of Paris 2024, with Kate Douglass of the United States taking silver and Australia's Kaylee McKeown claiming bronze.

“Looking at the line-up, it was crazy, and watching all the times come through throughout the season, it was definitely one of the most competitive races on the female side - so many world record holders, Olympic champions, so to come fifth among all those girls, I really can't complain,” she said.

“Holding my composure is something I've really worked on, and just holding my emotions together.

“I love swimming and I want to do it as long as possible, but it's not something I let tear me apart anymore, and I think that's really reflected this week. I'm really proud of myself.”

Team GB’s final involvement on day eight of the Games came to a close in the mixed 4x100m medley relay final.

Kathleen Dawson, James Wilby, Duncan Scott and Anna Hopkin finished seventh as the United States took gold in a new world-record time on the penultimate night of swimming at Paris 2024.

“The French have been going pretty crazy this past week and diving in next to Leon it was always going to be wild so it was loud,” said Wilby.

“A couple of my last strokes ended up synching up with his because I was deafened even swimming. It's been a great crowd and a great atmosphere.”

Hopkin added: “That race is always really fun and I'm always proud of this team.”

Scott could feature in the men’s 4x100m medley final tomorrow evening and after becoming Scotland’s most decorated Olympian, a third medal at these Games would see him move level with Jason Kenny for most medals won by Team GB at the summer Olympics.

Speaking after the mixed 4x100m medley final, Scott said: “That's all in the past and I'm delusional in that I go into every race thinking I can win and it's great being part of this team.

“No one thought it would be as quick at that but I've had a hell of a week and really enjoyed it.”
