Women's artistic gymnasts shine with fourth-place finish at Paris 2024

Team GB narrowly missed out again at the Bercy Arena as the women's artistic gymnastics team finished fourth.

On a day where the USA's Simone Biles won her fifth Olympic gold medal, Italy and Brazil too were intent on making history to give Team GB the chance for a medal.

Italy took silver, their first women's team medal since the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam while Brazil claimed their first-ever women's team medal by just 0.234 points.

Becky Downie was the shining light in Team GB's performance, which also saw impressive showings from Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Abigail Martin, and Ruby Evans.

The 32-year-old, who is making her return to the Olympic scene in Paris, stormed to a jaw-dropping score of 14.933.

“I knew that every point one counts in a team final," she said.

"We said at the start we would go all out and we left everything out there on the floor.

"I’m so proud of them, we couldn’t have done anymore. We did everything we possibly could. We went for broke.

"To be that close in such a big comp is really hard but hopefully these guys will be back and have more finals to come."

It all started on the floor as Ruby Evans opened up for Team GB with a 13.100 and Abigail Martin and Alice Kinsella to take the team total to 137.730 after the first rotation.

Evans then followed up with the strongest score on the vault with her 13.966, pushing the team up the standings, even with her 0.3 deduction on the landing.

But it was on the uneven bars that Team GB were set to shine.

Downie's performance, paired with that of Alice Kinsella and Georgia-Mae Fenton rocketed Team GB into bronze medal position ahead of the final rotation.

On the beam apparatus, Team GB scored a stellar 164.263, with Fenton, Downie and Kinsella all nailing their routines under immense pressure but it fell just short of a medal.

Downie will return in the women's uneven bars final with Georgia-Mae Fenton and Alice Kinsella in the all-around final.
