Paris 2024 Day One: Team GB athletes in action

It's officially day one of Paris 2024 and medals are to be won on the road and in the pool.

With a total of 14 golds up for grabs on Day One of Paris 2024, here are the Team GB highlights to watch out for.

Road Cycling Time Trial

Josh Tarling will be contesting the road cycling men’s time trial at 16:34 CET, with the 20-year-old aiming to add to his world bronze and European gold earned in the past year.

Tarling arrives in Paris in great form and pulled no punches as to his ambitions on Saturday.

“To win it,” he said. “It is determined on how hard you can go and as long as I get everything out of myself, that is good. But I want to win it.

“There’s no pressure on me, I can’t control it. I have done everything I can. As long as I am happy with my ride, I am happy.”

He will be preceded by Anna Henderson, who will take part in the road cycling women’s time trial at 14:30. She is making her debut at the Olympic Games, having switched from skiing to cycling as a teenager after breaking her leg. The 25-year-old has already clinched time trial silver medals at the European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Swimming

The first swimming medals will be handed out on Day One with finals in the men’s 400m freestyle, women’s 4x100m freestyle and men’s 4x100m freestyle. Kieran Bird will be aiming to reach the men’s 400m freestyle final, while there could also be British representation in the team events.

Meanwhile, three-time Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty and Keanna MacInnes will be hoping to be in the men’s 100m breaststroke and women’s 100m butterfly semi-finals respectively.

The morning session gets underway at 11:00 with the evening session starting at 20:30.

Diving - 3m Synchro

Also in the pool, Team GB’s divers are underway on Day One as the pairing of Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen join forces again in the 3m synchro.

Mew Jensen, 22, was one of the youngest British athletes at Tokyo, and since she and Harper teamed up last year, they’ve won silver and bronze in the World Championships in Fukuoka and Doha respectively.

The duo take to the board from 11:00, with the final expected to be wrapped up by noon.

Shooting - Air Rifle

The first medal of the 2024 Olympic Games will actually be won 230km south of Paris, at the Châteauroux shooting centre.

Seonaid McIntosh, Britain’s most successful female rifle shooter of all-time, teams up with Britain’s first Olympic male rifle shooter since London 2012, Mike Bargeron, in the 10m air rifle mixed team event.

The Scot, 28, finished 12th in the women’s 10m event in 2020 and has a range of World Cup medals to her name, including a 10m mixed team gold in Cairo earlier this year.

Her teammate Bargeron, 30, shot a British Record Qualifying score in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions events, which the Bromley local will also compete in at Paris.

The qualifying round starts at 9am, with the final taking place between 10:30 and 11:30.

Team GB will also open their campaigns in men’s hockey as David Ames captains his team against Spain at 10am and the women's artistic gymnastics qualifying round takes place.

Whilst the Chateau de Versailles sets the backdrop for the eventing dressage stage.
