Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe chasing historic medal in artistic swimming

Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe sit in fourth place after the artistic swimming duet technical routine.

The childhood friends and two-time Olympians are on track to record Team GB's best ever finish in artistic swimming since Caroline Holmyard and Carolyn Wilson's fourth place finish from LA 1984, which was the event's Olympic debut.

The two-time world championship medallists produced a stunning routine of 264.0282 points and sit just 0.6784 behind the Netherland's Bregje and Noortje de Brouwer in third.

The Chinese pair of Liuyi and Qianyi Wang are comfortably in first whilst Anna-Maria and Eirini-Maria Alexandri of Austria are second with the free routine still to come.

"We're really happy with that," said Thorpe. "We kind of looked at bronze and we're like 0.7 or 0.07 off the bronze medal, so it's definitely in reach for tomorrow.

"I think that we're going to make a few changes tonight ahead of tomorrow's competition and we're just gonna do all we can to try and fight for those medals."

Shortman and Thorpe showcased their famous Big Ben routine, to push them into third with the Chinese duo still to go.

And with one of the hardest difficulties of the day, scoring 40.100, the pairing clinched an artistic impression score of 98.5000 to keep hold of fourth.

The free routine will be contested tomorrow, with the results combined with the technical routine to determine medals.

Team GB have never medalled in artistic swimming, with Shortman and Thorpe on the cusp of making history.
