In Review: Team GB's January Winter Wrap Up

New Year. Same Team GB.

British athletes rang in the New Year with a slew of medals across several sports as Milan-Cortina 2026 inches ever-closer.

Here's how they fared in January:

Bob to the top

Team Hall secured their first Bobsleigh World Cup gold in two years when they became the first non-German crew to win in Winterberg since 2012.

The four-man crew of Brad Hall, Taylor Lawrence, Greg Cackett and Arran Gulliver started together for the first time in 13 months after an injury-blighted 2023/24 season but the quartet more than made up for lost time when they took to the ice in Germany.

Their combined time of 1:48.07 saw them not only pick up a deserved gold but also finish 19 hundredths ahead of reigning two-time Olympic champion and home favourite Francesco Friedrich.

But Team Hall weren't finished there. Later that month they picked up a bronze in St. Moritz and silver in Innsbruck before securing a second World Cup win in Switzerland.

“We need to learn as much as possible and we haven't got the six teams like the Germans have so I'm very proud of the boys," said Hall. "They did great and I'm happy to come home with a gold medal."

Weston top of the world

Matt Weston picked up Team GB's first medal of 2025 with back-to-back golds at the Skeleton World Cup to surpass fellow Brit Marcus Wyatt at the standings summit ahead of the final weekend of action.

Weston made the podium in all five of the World Cup events at the end of 2024 without reaching the top step, but put that right at the first opportunity in the New Year with victory in Winterberg.

The Brit backed up his heroics a week later in Switzerland as he took top spot in St. Moritz by more than half a second in a 40-strong field, clocking in at 2:14.61 to extend his lead at the top of the overall standings heading into the final World Cup race of the year in Lillehammer.

Weston won his first World Championship title in St. Moritz two years ago and revealed he couldn't imagine a better place for his total tally of career golds to reach double figures.

“It’s definitely extra special to win here in St. Moritz,” said Weston. “It’s special no matter where you finish on this track because of the history but to come away with gold means a huge amount.

“My confidence was high after last week and from medalling in every race but I put pressure on myself to keep these results up. I never just expect to medal - I have to work really, really hard with the team to be in a position to challenge when you’ve got such a strong field - but that’s the aim every week.

"I really enjoyed today - the support from friends and family was incredible - and I’m in a good place with a lot of confidence going into the next few races.

"Hopefully, I’ll come away with the overall title - that’s the main goal at the moment. To go into the World Championships in Lake Placid with the overall title won would be a big boost.”

Brookes soars in Switzerland

Mia Brookes started her 2025 with back-to-back Big Air wins, scoring 184.25 in Klagenfurt to take top spot a month after doing the same in Beijing.

Her run of form continued with another win and an early birthday present when she took gold in the women's snowboard slopestyle event at the 2025 Laax Open.

The 18-year-old's Swiss success now means she leads the Snowboard World Cup rankings in Slopestyle, Big Air and Park & Pipe.

Reflecting on her victory, Brookes told Olympics.com: "Definitely unreal right now. Super hyped that it was on this course. It's definitely been one on the books for a long time, so to win it, especially on a 'home mountain', is really special."

The snowboarding starlet rounded off her January with bronze at the X Games to earn back-to-back podium finishes at event.
