Franklin and Clarke reach C1 and K1 semi-finals as canoe slalom run continues

Joe Clarke and Mallory Franklin continued Team GB's strong showing on the white water after paddling their way to respective semi-finals.

Clarke made his Olympic return for the first time in eight years after missing out on Tokyo 2020 and made his mark on the event he became Olympic champion in at Rio 2016: the men's K1.

Having picked up 50 penalty points on his first run, Clarke was left in a dangerous 23rd place meaning he had to pull something special on his second.

And he did exactly that, catapulting up the leader board with a time of 85.62 and now headed into the semi-finals in fourth place.

The 31-year-old said: “I know I’m fully capable of making the semi-final but knowing you can and doing it are two different things especially with the pressure from the crowd, the media and most importantly yourself.

“Pressure is a privilege. It’s a privilege to be under pressure as it means the media, spectators and competitors all think that you’re one to be beaten.

“You have to stay calm, remind yourself you know what you’re doing. I was in the same situation in Rio and went on to win the gold.

“So it means nothing, it’s just another run under pressure which is exactly what it will be tomorrow, two runs under pressure.”

Franklin qualified in sixth place for the women's C1 semi final, with a time of 104.72 seconds on her first run.

The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist suffered 50 penalties in the second run after failing to pass through the final gate but it didn’t matter as her qualification was already in the bag.

The keen baker is looking forward to heating up the pace when she races again in Wednesday's semi-final.

She said: “It was probably a little bit tactical today paddling the course knowing that I had the pace to get through.

“Therefore, prepping for some of the moves tomorrow rather than paddling this course as I would if I was trying to be the quickest on it.

“If I can keep my head straight and deliver tomorrow then who knows what can happen.”
