Douglas completes historic Olympic double in Beijing

Montell Douglas swapped tracks in Beijing after she became the first British female to represent Team GB at both Summer and Winter Olympics.

Douglas swapped her spikes from the 100m in 2008 for a sled in 2022 as she took to the Yanqing National Sliding Centre with pilot Mica McNeill for the 2-woman bobsleigh.

And she was delighted that all her hard work at the highest level had enabled her to walk previously unconquered ground.

“It has been 14 years and a very different track," said Douglas, 36, who was a reserve at PyeongChang 2018.

“I’ve been doing bobsleigh for five years now. I’ve built on my experience, my training is more gym and power based. Shorter distances, not 100m which isn’t fun for me in my old age!

“I’ve changed things a bit to make me a better bobsledder. It’s not easy doing elite competition for very long in both summer and winter sports but I’m very proud that I have done that.”

Things did not go all to plan for the British duo as they sit 19th after the first two runs but McNeill is determined to slide up the leaderboard when the Olympic competition concludes on Saturday.

"It hasn’t all come together," said McNeill, a Youth Olympic silver medallist 2012. "It is one of those things where we don’t fully know what’s going on.

“We need to go back, speak to the coaches, look at the timesheets, reset and recover and come back - it’s a four-run race.

“As athletes we are driven by always wanting to be the best, so we’ve got to eat, sleep and come back with a fresh mindset and see what we can do.

“If we come back and we put everything together and it’s clear on the timesheet, no matter what the end result is, we know that we’ve done what we wanted to do."
